iMessage

iMessage is a messaging service developed by Apple Inc. It allows users to send text messages, photos, videos, documents, and other types of media to other Apple users through an Internet connection. iMessage is available on Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.

iMessage uses end-to-end encryption to ensure the privacy and security of messages sent between users. This means that only the sender and the recipient can see the contents of the messages, and no one else, including Apple, can access the messages.

In addition to basic text messaging, iMessage offers a range of features such as group messaging, message reactions, message effects, and the ability to send money to other users through Apple Pay. It also supports third-party apps that can be used within the messaging app.

One limitation of iMessage is that it can only be used to message other Apple users. However, Apple has introduced the ability to send and receive iMessages on other devices such as Apple Watch and iPod touch.

Manage iMessage apps

You can add apps to your favorites for quick access to them in the app drawer. You can also rearrange the apps in the app drawer, remove the ones you don't want, and more. This is how you do it:
  • From the app drawer, swipe left and tap the More More button.
  • Tap Edit in the top left corner to do the following:
  • To add an app to your favorites, tap the Add button Add.
  • To remove an app from Favorites, tap the Remove Remove button, then tap Remove from Favorites.
  • To rearrange the apps in the app drawer, touch and hold the icon with three gray lines, then move the apps in the order you want.
  • To hide an app, disable it.
  • Tap Done.

Features

iMessage allows users to send texts, documents, photos, videos, contact information, and group messages over the Internet to other iOS or macOS users. iMessage is an alternative to SMS and MMS messaging for most users with devices running iOS 5 or later. The "Send as SMS" option in Messages will cause the message to be sent via SMS if the sender does not have an active Internet connection. If the recipient does not have an Internet connection, the message must be stored on a server until the connection is restored.

security and privacy

On November 4, 2014, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) listed iMessage on their "Secure Messaging Scorecard", giving it a score of 5 out of 7. You received points for having encrypted communications in transit, having encrypted communications with keys that the provider does not have access to (end-to-end encryption), having past communications secure if the keys are stolen (forward secrecy), having your security design well documented and have a recent independent security audit. It lost points because users cannot verify the identity of contacts and because the source code is not open to independent review. In September 2015, Matthew Green pointed out that because iMessage does not display key fingerprints for out-of-band verification, users cannot verify that a man-in-the-middle attack has not occurred. The post also pointed out that iMessage uses RSA key exchange.
